How to stop picking up energies as an empath?

Being an empath can feel like a double-edged sword. On one side, you’re deeply connected to the world and people around you. You’re the one everyone comes to for comfort, understanding and support. But on the flip side? You’re left carrying emotions and energies that aren’t even yours and that’s a heavy burden.

So, how do you stop picking up every stray vibe in the room while still being your compassionate, amazing self? It’s all about boundaries, awareness, and self-care. 

Let's take a closer look that will help you to not pick up energies as an empath - 


1. Understand your gift 

First, let’s take a moment to appreciate what being an empath really means. Your ability to sense emotions, energies, and even unspoken feelings is a superpower. But like any superhero, you need to learn how to control your powers to prevent burnout.

The biggest challenge empaths face is distinguishing their own feelings from the emotions of others. Have you ever walked into a room feeling fine, but within minutes, you’re anxious, sad, or irritable for no apparent reason? That’s the empath experience in a nutshell. Recognizing this is the first step to reclaiming your emotional space.

2. Learn to ground yourself

Grounding is like an emotional anchor that keeps you steady when the energetic waters around you get choppy. Think of it as connecting yourself to a solid foundation, so other people’s vibes don’t knock you over.

Here’s a simple grounding exercise -

Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or stand with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Visualize roots growing from the soles of your feet, burrowing deep into the earth. Feel the earth’s strength and stability flowing up through those roots and into your body.

3. Set Clear Boundaries (without feeling guilty)

Empaths often struggle with boundaries. You want to help everyone. But here’s the thing - you can’t pour from an empty cup. Protecting your energy isn’t selfish but it’s necessary.

Start by saying no when you need to. Whether it’s declining an invite to a chaotic event or stepping away from a friend’s party, give yourself permission to prioritize your well-being.

4. Identify energy vampires 

Energy vampires can be people or certain places or environments with high negative energy that leave you completely or partially drained. Those people might vibrate on a completely different frequency than yours and that's the reason you feel uneasy, anxious or drained. 

For instance, if you're someone who loves animals and are kind to them and if you come in close proximity with a person who is always angry and cruel to animals, there won't be a match with the energy and you might feel odd or drained. 

Your job here is to not react to the behavior of toxic people and keep yourself calm and don't let it affect you more than a day. Sometimes we can't help but it continues to affect us for more than we'd like. If that's the case, then you need to do a cleansing ritual or a guided meditation to cleanse yourself of any toxic energy affecting you.

5. Create a shield of energy 


Take out some time for yourself and take some deep breaths. It's better to do this at night before sleeping or just after you wake up. Imagine yourself surrounded by a white light and think of it as the light of the source, your higher self or you can also call it the light of the universe. 

Then, focus on the positivity and calmness that it radiates and feel as if it's protecting you from external negative energies. It is an invisible shield but it will always be with you, protect you and block negative energies from people while allowing love and positivity to flow in. 

6. Practice energy clearing in your home


If you suspect some energies are trying to stick with you, do energy purifying rituals at your home. There are various kinds of rituals that you can do like smudging where you burn sage or palo santo or Sambrani cups and let the smoke cleanse the aura of the room. 

You can also use singing bowls or mantras of deities to cleanse and break up stagnant energy in your house. 

7. Spend time in nature 


Nature can act like a refresh button for empaths. Spending time outside, whether it's a walk in the park, sitting by the beach, doing breathing exercises outside or swimming in the pool, nature can help release absorbed energy and recharge your own energy and make you ready for the upcoming days. 

It helps you to slow down and reconnect with yourself and at times also makes us realize that we are just a part of nature and we have the inherent ability to heal and if you've reached a point where you've healed yourself to a high extent, you also get the gift of healing others. 

8. Meditate daily for extended periods of time


If you don't have time you can just meditate for 10 minutes a day, but the benefits are greatly increased if you can extend your sessions for a bit longer than usual. I often notice that the days I don't meditate for long, I feel tired easily and the protective shield doesn't work the way it should work. 

But if I increase the amount of time I meditate, I don't even have to visualize any kind of protection, everything just happens automatically. It's because the energies we get from meditation are pure and connected to the betterment of our soul and our physical and mental well-being and if you connect with those energies frequently, we can easily and naturally avoid negative energies from entering our field and the protective energies can also prevent us from draining and low energies from people or environments.

9. Tap into the energy of love and gratitude 


Listen to love songs, watch movies that depict love stories, read romance novels. It doesn't matter if you start to feel sad or vibrate a sense of lack if you still haven't found your romantic partner. Doing this will purify your energy and remove stuck negative energies.

Love as an emotion has the ability to heal you. It works on a deeper level that goes beyond the logical mind. Meditate on the feeling of love. It can be towards anything, a human being, nature, hope for the welfare of the Earth or the vast space of the universe. It helps if you can meditate in an open space free of walls or trees to feel the space element and absorb energy from the abundant space.

Similarly, gratitude also can help you to get rid of toxic energies acting as a barrier to your growth and well-being. You can be thankful to all the little things you experience daily, even the bad ones that act as lessons for the future. Most bad experiences act as reminders that we need to do more inner work and vibrate higher in order to not align with negative people and experiences.

10. Stop consuming negative news


If you want to maintain spiritual hygiene, reduce or stop consuming negative news. Watching or reading about events and happenings that has the potential to create fear in our minds on a regular basis can impact our energy system in unwanted ways.

Just like regular meditation is good for cleansing your energy, negative news that makes you stressed or anxious can have the opposite effect and lead to fearful energies stick to your aura.  This in turn can lead to you vibrate lower and that's when your system becomes weak and it becomes prone to energy attacks. Don't let negativity and fear attach to your system for too long.
